ROUND CHURCHES
Mysterious churches – Romanesque round churches were built between 1150 and 1200. Temples are characterized by unusual circular shape. They usually have three storeys, the central part of the temples is occupied by a huge pillar. The reason why the churches were build is mysterious and it is a subject of numerous hypotheses. It is believed that the temples were used as refuge from invaders. The lowest level played cult functions, warehouses were situated upstairs but it is not known precisely what was stored there. The top floors were refuge for people during the wars and had military functions as the place where the attacks were repelled. Other researchers claim that the rotundas were food and weapons warehouses for troops of the Danish King Valdemar II who headed eastwards to Estonia after the conquest of the island of Rügen. Another hypothesis claim that they were built by the Knights Templar. The frescoes located in the largest of the round churches in Østerlars depict the characters with a head of a dog, constellations etc. which were also found in the temples of the Knights Templar in southern France. Areas recently discovered under the Østerlars church may also indicate that the Templars who were adept at building secret passages and hidden chambers were likely the builders of Bornholm rotundas.

It was built by the Danes at the request of the Archbishop of Lund who fought for hegemony on the island with the Danish king in thirteenth century. The castle was supposed to be a counterweight to the Lilleborg royal palace located in the central part of the island. There is also a theory that Hammershus was the residence of the King Valdemar II of Denmark. It was used as a base for Danish Crusades.
