SÁPMI (LAPLAND)
Sápmi is a cultural region stretching from the Kola Peninsula in Russia in the east towards the northern parts of Finland, Sweden and Norway in the west. This vast area (380 thousand km²) is characterised by a record low population density (in Finnish Lapland there are less than 2 people per km²). The Laplanders (Saami) are the indigenous inhabitants whose livelihood (for quite a large number of them), just like centuries ago, is reindeer herding. Lapland is a true wildlife sanctuary – one of the largest on the continent. At the end of World War II many Norwegian and Finnish towns in the North were completely destroyed by the retreating German troops.

Rovaniemi is the capital of Finnish province of Lapland and one of the largest municipalities in Finland (in relation to the area). After World War II the town was reconstructed according to Alvar Aalto’s plans. This world famous Finnish modernist architect created the network of roads in Rovaniemi in the shape of reindeer antler.
DID YOU KNOW?
Siberian husky dogs were used as sled dogs even 1000 years ago by the Chukchi – the indigenous people living in the North-Eastern parts of Russia.

THE SAMI PEOPLE (LAPLANDERS)
The Sami people are descendants of the pre Indo-European nomadic tribe that inhabited Fennoscandia ten thousand years ago. They speak Saami languages which belong to a group of Uralic languages. They are not related to other Scandinavian nations. The word ‘Laplander’ comes most likely of a Swedish word for a patch and it is considered pejorative. It was replaced by other descriptions: Sami people (also Sámi or Saami).

DID YOU KNOW WHERE NORTHERN LIGHTS COME FROM?
The aurora is caused by explosions on the surface of the Sun creating solar winds. They contain particles – mostly protons and electrons – moving with high speed and having high energy. When they reach the Earth they are spread by the magnetic field of our planet. Some of them are directed into the space but many of the particles reach the magnetic poles. Their colliding with atoms in the ionosphere causes lighting. If they collide with atoms of oxygen the light is coloured red or green, if nitrogen it makes the aurora purple or claret-coloured. Hydrogen and helium provide blue and violet lights.
