FINNMARK
The largest (48,618 km²) and also the least populated county of Norway located in the north-eastern part of the country. The first people settled here 10 000 years ago. Nowadays the number of inhabitants is approximately 73 thousand. The capital of the province is Vadsø although Alta is the biggest community. The towns of Finnmark were almost completely destroyed by the German army during its retreat. The destruction was aimed at slowing down the advance of the Red Army at the end of World War II. The province is a kind of melting pot where Lappish, Finnish, Russian and Norwegian cultures meet.
Hunt for the Northern Lights
DID YOU KNOW WHERE NORTHERN LIGHTS COME FROM?
The aurora is caused by explosions on the surface of the Sun creating solar winds. They contain particles – mostly protons and electrons – moving with high speed and having high energy. When they reach the Earth they are spread by the magnetic field of our planet. Some of them are directed into the space but many of the particles reach the magnetic poles. Their colliding with atoms in the ionosphere causes lighting. If they collide with atoms of oxygen the light is coloured red or green, if nitrogen it makes the aurora purple or claret-coloured. Hydrogen and helium provide blue and violet lights.

SAMI PEOPLE (THE LAPPS)
The Sami people (the Lapps) are descendants of Pre-Indo-European nomadic people who inhabited Fennoscandia 10 thousand years ago. They speak Sami languages belonging to the Finno-Ugric language family. The Sami are not related to the other Scandinavian nations and are the only indigenous people of Scandinavia recognized and protected under the international conventions of indigenous peoples. The ‘Lapp’ word probably comes from a Swedish term for a patch what may imply its pejorative meaning. That is why today’s commonly used term is ‘the Sami’.
SÁPMI
The name of the cultural region traditionally being settled by the Sami. The region is situated in the area stretching from the central part of the Scandinavian Peninsula to the Kola Peninsula within four countries: Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia.
