Gothenburg – Scandinavian Amsterdam – the second biggest city in Sweden after Stockholm. Gothenburg was founded by royal edict of Gustav II Adolf in the beginning of seventeenth century. The city was built on the shores of the Kattegatt along the mouth of the Göta River. On the west side it is surrounded by a cluster of larger and smaller islands forming the Archipelago of Gothenburg. Gothenburg has been designed by Dutch architects skilled at draining of wetlands along the river. As a result the city got the look like other Dutch cities built at that time. During the Dutch period Gothenburg followed Dutch town laws. Consequently Dutch gained tremendous influence and political power here. Even introduction of Dutch language as an official language in the city was considered.
