ABBA

ABBA was a pop band formed by Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Agnetha Fältskog in 1972. Their great popularity started with winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974. Their ‘Waterloo’ hit was a huge commercial success all over the world. The glory days continue up to date, even though ABBA broke up in the early 80s.

DROTTNINGHOLM PALACE

Drottningholm Palace on the island Lovön is the best preserved seventeenth-century palace in Sweden. The residence has been a seat of the present King of Sweden – Carl XVI Gustaf since 1981. A beautiful interior of the palace formed under the inspiration of successive rulers of Sweden is not the only attraction of the royal estate. The palace gardens, the park, the theatre or a visit to China Pavilion are must-sees during a visit to Drottningholm. The palace has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991.

Several photo sessions of ABBA were done in Drottningholm Park. Some episodes of the ‘ABBA The Movie’ was also filmed in the royal estate.

DROTTNINGHOLM THEATRE

Drottningholm Theatre is an opera theatre located in the royal estate. The annual summer opera festival is the most important artistic event taking place in Drottningholm Theatre these days. The construction of the theatre began at the end of the seventeenth century but in 1762 the building was destroyed in the fire. Its rebuilding started immediately and four years later – in 1766 – the theatre was reopened. The visit in the theatre is a real journey into the past. The structure of the theatre has remained almost unchanged since the rebuilding. Moreover almost all the furnishing is original and the actors often perform in original costumes to the accompaniment of original instruments. Noteworthy is also the unusual stage which depth is significantly greater than the width.

Drottningholm Theatre was the mise-en-scene for the Ingmar Bergman film ‘The Magic Flute’.
