LOFOTEN
Archipelago on the Norwegian Sea. The islands are separated from the archipelago of Vesterålen by the strait of Roftsundet. Lofoten are characterized by mountain massifs with steep and high slopes which are divided by short, narrow and picturesque fjords. Pleasant beaches and colourful fishing villages complement the idyllic landscape. The islands are also a centre for winter cod fishing. At the beginning of the year, cods come to the Lofoten shallows for spawning. Warm waters of the Gulf Stream makes the climate milder and water temperature higher. The relaxed atmosphere and treasures of nature attract many tourists.

Among defenders of the city, there was Polish Independent Highland Brigade commanded by General Zygmunt Bohusz-Szyszko. Polish destroyers – ORP ‘Grom’, ‘Burza’ and ‘Blyskawica’ as well as the passenger ships (used as transport vessels) – M/S ‘Chrobry’, M/S ‘Batory’ and M/S ‘Sobieski’ – took part in the naval battles. 4 May ORP Grom was sunk by a German bomber. 59 crew members lost their lives in the attack.
