KALMAR CASTLE

Place where a treaty called The Kalmar Union between Sweden, Norway and Denmark was signed in 1397. The ‘Kingdom of Three Crowns’ was established as a result of a political plan of The Queen of Denmark – Margaret I. It was the most powerful alliance in Northern Europe then. Three countries were formally independent but it was Denmark in fact that played the first fiddle. The Union lasted over 120 years but particular interests of allies effected in many internal conflicts being the reason that the alliance was often only on paper.
